In product packaging design,
folding carton has become the preferred packaging form of FMCG, food, electronic products and other industries with the advantages of
high cost efficiency, environmental protection, recyclability and transportation convenience. Choosing the appropriate style of paper boxes not only enhances product protection but also increases the appeal of the shelves and the user experience. This article will focus on five mainstream designs: reverse folding end (RTE), straight insertion end (STE), snap-bottom (1-2-3 bottom), automatic bottom (automatic locking), and two-piece
packaging box (tray and sleeve). It will analyze their structural characteristics, applicable scenarios, and selection recommendations to provide decision-making references for brand owners.
I. Reverse Tuck End (RTE): Balances efficient sealing with structural stability
Structural features: The RTE design uses multiple folded flaps to bite each other to form a tightly closed top or bottom structure, which can be securely encapsulated without glue or staples. The folding process needs manual operation, but after molding, the tear resistance is strong, suitable for the scene that needs to open and close repeatedly.
Applicable products: Baked goods, health products, small tools and other goods with certain requirements for sealing performance. For instance, the cookie box adopts an RTE structure, which can effectively prevent moisture and allow consumers to open and close it multiple times for use.
Advantages: Low cost, strong recyclability, suitable for small and medium batch production.
Limitations: The manual assembly efficiency is low, and it is not suitable for high-speed automated production lines.
II. Straight Tuck End (STE): A balance between quick assembly and easy opening
Structural features: The end of the STE paper box is designed as a combination of a tongue and a slot. It can be sealed simply by inserting it. When opening, it only requires tearing off or pulling out the tongue. The operation is very convenient. This structure is commonly used in rectangular or square box bodies. The sides often adopt a lock-bottom design to enhance the load-bearing capacity.
Applicable products: Stationery, cosmetics, small electronic products and other lightweight goods. For example, if the lipstick packaging box adopts the STE structure, it can be quickly assembled and is also convenient for consumers to open with one hand.
Advantages: High assembly efficiency, suitable for automated production.
Limitations: Limited load-bearing capacity, not suitable for heavy or irregular-shaped products.
III. Snap-Lock Bottom (1-2-3 bottom) : A classic solution for load-bearing reinforcement and simplified assembly
Structural features: The 1-2-3 bottom is named so because three flanges need to be folded in sequence and fixed with clips during assembly. After the bottom is formed, it forms a rigid support structure, and its load-bearing capacity is significantly better than that of ordinary lock bottoms. Its top is usually combined with a flip cover or plug cover design, balancing sealing performance and ease of opening.
Applicable products: Bottled beverages, canned goods, small household appliances and other heavy items. For example, the six-pack beer box uses the 1-2-3 bottom, which can stably carry multiple bottles of liquid and prevent deformation during transportation.
Advantages: Excellent load-bearing performance, standardized assembly steps.
Limitations: The structural complexity is relatively high, and the mold cost is slightly higher.
IV. Automatic Bottom (Automatic Locking): The ideal choice for automated production
Structural features: When the automatic bottom paper box is unfolded, it can automatically fold and lock the bottom by pressing the side of the box body without the need for manual intervention. It is suitable for high-speed packaging production lines. After the bottom is locked, it forms a high-strength grid structure, with outstanding pressure resistance and shock resistance.
Applicable products: Fast food takeout, e-commerce express, daily necessities and other scenes requiring large-scale and fast packaging. For example, pizza boxes with an automatic bottom design can be instantly formed on the production line, improving delivery efficiency.
Advantages: Fully automated assembly, with extremely high production efficiency.
Limitations: High requirements for paper thickness and stiffness, with a slight increase in material cost.
V. Two-Piece Box (Tray & Sleeve): A representative of high-end texture and flexible combination
Structural features: It is composed of an independent tray (inner box) and a sleeve (outer box). The tray is used to fix the product, and the sleeve can be slid to open and close, serving both display and protection functions. The design can use bronzing, embossing and other processes to enhance the brand premium.
Applicable products: Luxury goods, high-end cosmetics, gift boxes and other items that emphasize appearance and texture. For example, a perfume
Gift Box uses a leather tray and a matte sleeve combination to highlight the high-end positioning of the product.
Advantages: Strong display ability, reusable.
Limitations: High material consumption, high cost.
Selection recommendation: Comprehensive consideration based on product features and scenario requirements
- Load-bearing capacity and protection: For heavy goods, it is preferred to choose 1-2-3 bottoms or automatic bottoms. Fragile items can be equipped with a two-piece structure for enhanced cushioning.
- Production efficiency: Automated production lines are compatible with automatic base or STE; For small-batch customization, RTE or snap-on bottom options are available.
- User experience: Goods that need frequent opening are recommended to use RTE or STE; for high-end gifts, a two-piece sleeve design is preferred.
- Cost control: When budget is limited, RTE and STE are economical choices; for those who value brand image, two-piece packaging can be considered.
By matching product features, production conditions and consumption scenarios, brands can precisely select the style of folding cartons, ensuring packaging functionality while achieving cost optimization and brand value enhancement.
